Highlights
- HM01 – Cut is obtained aboard the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City.
- You need the Cascade Badge from Misty to use Cut outside of battle.
- Cut has 50 base power and cannot be deleted without the Move Deleter in Fuchsia City.
HM01 Cut is the first of many HMs you need to use to progress in the overworld. Can can be used to unlock blocked paths, hidden items, and access to key areas like Vermilion Gym, among others. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what you need to do to get Cut:
Reach Vermilion City
From Cerulean City, head south through Route 5 and enter the Underground Path. Continue south to reach Vermilion City.
Board the S.S. Anne
Head to the dock in the South of Vermilion City and board the S.S. Anne. Inside the ship, you can battle various trainers in cabins; it is optional, but it provides good EXP, so I would recommend fighting all the Trainers.
To get cut, you need to meet the ship’s captain.
- Go to the upper cabin using the stairs on the left.
- On the ship’s upper floor, go to the far-right corner.
- You will meet your rival, who will challenge you to a battle.
- After defeating him, use the stairs to enter the captain’s cabin.

Rivals Team
When you fight your rival on SS Anne, he uses the following team.
If you chose Squirtle:
- Pidgeotto
- Raticate
- Kadabra
- Ivysaur
If you chose Bulbasaur:
- Pidgeotto
- Raticate
- Kadabra
- Charmeleon
If you chose Charmander:
- Pidgeotto
- Raticate
- Kadabra
- Wartortle
Help the Captain
After entering the Captain’s cabin, you will see that the Captain is seasick. You have to interact with him to help him. Once you do so, he will give you the HM for Cut as a gesture of appreciation for helping him out.

How to Use Cut Outside of Battle
Simply teaching your Pokémon Cut is not enough. To use Cut outside of battle, you must defeat Misty and obtain the Cascade Badge.

Avoid teaching Cut to one of your main party members if possible, as Cut has a low base power of 50 and requires the move deleter in Fuchsia City to delete HM moves.
