Highlights
- HM05 – Flash illuminates dark caves like Rock Tunnel.
- You must have HM01 – Cut before attempting to obtain Flash.
- At least 10 Pokémon must be registered in your Pokédex.
- Flash is obtained from one of Professor Oak’s aides on Route 2.
In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Flash can be used to illuminate dark caves like Rock Tunnel. While it is not necessary for your progression, using flash makes traversing through the Rock Tunnel significantly easier. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what you need to do to get Flash:
Prerequisites: What You Need Before You Can Get Flash
Before you try to get Flash, there are two conditions you need to meet:
- You must already have HM01 – Cut. A small tree blocks the location with Flash. So, you will need Cut to access the area. (If you want to know how to get HM01-Cut, refer to this guide.)
- At least 10 different Pokémon are registered in your Pokédex. The NPC, which gives you HM for Flash, will only do so if you have completed this task.
Where to get HM05 Flash
1. Head to Route 2 Through Diglett’s Cave

- Diglett’s cave is located east of Vermilion City on Route 11.
- Enter the cave and follow the path to the end. It’s a linear cave, with no branching path.
- Keep going until you reach Route 2 on the other side.
Diglett’s cave is filled with Diglett and Dugtrio, and they have the ability Arena Trap, which traps grounded Pokémon. So either keep a flying or Levitating Pokémon at the front of your party or use repeals.

2. Navigate Route 2
Once you exit the Diglett’s Cave on Route 2, head south and use Cut on any obstacle you find. Keep traveling south until you find this building. And enter the building.

3. Talk to Professor Oak’s Aide
Inside the building, you’ll find two NPCs. Talk to the one with a white lab coat; he is one of Professor Oak’s aides. If you have 10 or more Pokémon registered in your Pokédex, he will give you HM05 – Flash.

How to Use Flash Outside of Battle
Simply teaching your Pokémon Flash is not enough. To use Cut outside of battle, you must defeat Brock and obtain the Boulder Badge.

Avoid teaching Flash to one of your main party members if possible, as Flash is a status move that lowers target accuracy, which can be useful at times but is mostly useless. A move deleter in Fuchsia City is required to delete HM moves.
