For your fourth gym badge, go to the Celadon City Gym. In Celadon City Gym, you will fight The Nature-Loving Princess Erica. She specializes in Grass-type Pokémon. Here’s everything you need to know to defeat Erica and earn the Rainbow Badge:

Erica’s Team
- Victreebel Lv. 29 Grass/Poison
- Tangela Lv. 24 Grass
- Vileplume Lv. 29 Grass/Poison
All of these Pokémon run status inflicting moves like Stun Spore, Sleep Powder, and Poison Powder. While fighting Erica, keep that in mind. Try to win as quickly as possible, as in a long battle, these statuses can wear you down.

Type Matchups
Grass is weak to Fire, Flying, Ice, Bug, and Poison. And resist Ground, Grass, and Water moves. However, Victreebel and Vileplume’s Grass/Poison typing makes them neutral against Poison and Ground attacks and gives them resistance to Fighting while adding a Psychic weakness.
Best Counters
Unlike the previous Gyms, your options of Pokémon are not that limited. So the number of counters for Erica is also high; some of these counters include:
Fire-types
- Charmeleon / Charizard
- Growlithe / Arcanine(FireRed exclusive)
- Vulpix / Ninetales (LeafGreen exclusive)
Fire-type attacks are the best answer to Erika. If you chose Charmander as you stater, use it. If not, you can catch a Growlithe or Vulpix from Route 8 and evolve it using a Fire-stone.
Flying-types
- Pidgeotto
- Golbat
- Fearow
Flying also hits Grass super effectively, so if you don’t have a Fire type, you can use them as well. Fearow, Golbat, and Pidgeotto are all early-game Pokémon you can use to fight Erica.
Rewards

After defeating Erica, you will be awarded the Rainbow Badge and TM19 Giga Drain
If you have the Rainbow Badge:
- Pokémon up to Level 50 obey.
- Allows the use of Strength outside of battle
Erica just has 3 Pokémon, which makes this a relatively easy fight. At this point, the game opens up for you. As the selection of Pokémon increases, most trainers have a full party of six. After this gym, complete all the story-related quests in Celedon and Saffron City before challenging the next gym. It will be a great way of training your team.
