Highlights
- Crossbows spawn in the Forest map.
- The crossbow is one of the deadliest weapons in Half Sword
- You have to reload your crossbow manually; there is no single-click reload.
- Aiming lacks a crosshair, making it difficult to use.
In Half Sword, the crossbow is one of the most lethal weapons. Unlike melee weapons, the crossbow demands patience, positioning, and precise execution. This guide breaks down where to find the crossbow, how to operate it effectively, and the best combat strategies.
Where to Find the Crossbow
You are most likely to find a crossbow in The Forest map, inside a large wooden crate near a stopped carriage. If you are lucky, then one of those crates would contain a bag of bolts, which allow you to reload.
Tip – If you find one, ensure it at the Tavern immediately. If you die without insurance, that rare spawn is gone.
How to Fire and Reload

Aiming: To aim with the Crossbow, hold Right Click to steady the weapon. It’s highly recommended that you switch to first-person view (using V) before doing so. Because there is no crosshair on the screen, you will be required to aim down the rail of the crossbow to visualize the projectile’s flight path.
Firing: Press Left-Click. At close-to-medium range, the bolt travels almost instantly.
Reload: There is no click button to reload in this game; you have to manually reload the crossbow. To do so:
- Press R to enter the reload stance
- Click and drag the drawstring back until it clicks into the locking mechanism.
- Drag a bolt from your bag and place it into the groove.
You are completely vulnerable while reloading. Never reload unless your enemy is tripped or you are at a safe distance. As a result, I would recommend the crossbow as an opener instead of your primary weapon.
Combat Effectiveness and Limitations
- Extremely strong against light or unarmored enemies
- Loses effectiveness against heavy armor
- Poor crowd control
- Not reliable for prolonged engagements
Best Ways to Use the Crossbow
- You will always spawn in with 1 bolt loaded every round.
- When opening fire with your crossbow on an enemy, you should immediately change to your melee weapon after your first shot. Against lightly armored enemies, you will be able to one-shot with a torso hit after you’ve opened fire
- If you want to increase your advantage before you close the distance to your opponent, shoot them in either arm in order to disable their use of that arm or to disarm them completely.
- If you’re targeting high-tier steel with a bolt, shoot it at the face slot in a helmet or thigh area. Shooting an enemy in the leg can lead to breaking the enemy’s balance.

The Crossbow in Half sword is a high-risk, high-reward tool. It requires you to be strategic, well-placed, and accurate, but if you make a mistake, the weapon will punish you for it.
FAQs
- Can I pick up bolts I’ve already fired?
- Yes, but it’s not recommended. Half Sword uses a complex physics engine; bolts can sometimes be retrieved from the ground or from the bodies of dead enemies. However, they are small and can occasionally glitch through the floor or break upon impact, making them unreliable.
- Why does my bolt bounce off the enemy without doing damage?
- This usually happens when fighting heavily armored knights. If a bolt hits high-tier plate armor, it will deflect.
