But it’s perfect for the early game and helps you fill out your Pokédex and gives you a chance to get a Magikarp, which can evolve into Gyarados, one of the strongest Pokémon in the game. Where to Find the Old Rod
Step 1: Reach Vermilion City
From Cerulean City, head south through Route 5 and enter the Underground Path. Continue south to reach Vermilion City. You don’t need to defeat Lt. Surge to obtain the Old Rod
Step 2: Find the Fishing Guru
In Vermilion City, head toward the Pokémon Center. Look for a small house next to the Pokémon Center. Enter the house and speak to the Fishing Guru inside. He will give you the Old Rod; there is no other requirement.
How to Use the Old Rod
Once obtained, follow these steps to catch a Pokémon:
- Stand facing the water
- Open your Bag
- Go to the Key Items pocket
- Select Old Rod
- Click Use
If a Pokémon bites, press A to catch it.
