The Hardships of Seafaring is one of the first quests you will complete in Of Ash and Steel, and it helps you get familiar with the starting area and its characters. The quest will ask you to talk with the crew members, help out around the camp, and complete a few small side tasks. This guide will tell you everything so you can finish the quest easily.
The Hardships Of Seafaring Quest

Once you take control of Tristan, talk to Sirdar. He will notice you are not feeling well after the long sea journey, and you can mention that you are seasick. Sirdar will then tell you to go and speak with the ship’s doctor, Emmett. After this conversation ends, the Hardships of Seafaring quest will begin.
Provisions in Danger




From where Sirdar is standing, turn left and head toward the shoreline. You will see Chump sitting near a boat and talking to him. He will ask you to take care of three bugs nearby.
- The first bug is behind Chump, near the first tent.
- The second is close to the uphill path on the right, where a soldier is blocking the way.
- The third bug usually wanders around in front of the medical camp.
Break Time

From where Sirdar is standing, walk straight ahead and then turn left. You will find Squid sitting by the shoreline talking to him, and he will point you toward Emmett.
Head straight from Squid’s spot to reach the medical camp, where you will find Emmett. When you ask him about the rum, he will tell you he doesn’t have any.

You can find the brandy inside a chest near the boat where Chump is sitting. After picking it up, go back to Squid and let him know that Emmett doesn’t have the tobacco.
Finally, talk to Rower. He will admit that he stole something and threw it onto a rock nearby. It’s easy to find. Go to the opposite side of the medical camp and use the ladder there to climb up. Keep moving across the ledges, jumping when needed, and you will eventually spot the kit. Pick it up and take it back to Emmett, then ask if it belongs to him.
Emmett will ask where you found it. You can choose the first dialogue option to keep things calm, or the second option if you want Emmett to get into a fight with Rower.
After returning the Armour Reinforcing Kit, Emmett will give you some Rutmane. Take it back to Squid to finish this part of the quest.
Fish Steak
On your way to get the brandy, you will run into a guy named Fish. Talk to him, and he will give you the Fish Steak quest, asking you to find a “stick” of some kind.

Head over to Chump and ask if he has a weapon you can use. He will give you a pirate’s leg. Take it back to Fish and complete a friendly spar with him. Once that’s done, the quest will be finished.
What Use Is A Cartographer

Go talk to Murray, who’s standing next to the medical camp. Go through his dialogue, then head down to the shoreline where Chump usually sits. There, speak with Gellert and listen to what he has to say. After that conversation, the quest will be completed.
